Paramedics are hailing the bystanders, police officers and Ottawa airport staff who teamed up Tuesday evening to save a traveller who went into cardiac arrest after flying into the city.
The rescuers used a defibrillator to revive the man in his 70s.
He was conscious when paramedics arrived after being called in at 6:24 p.m. but he needed further treatment as they took him to hospital. The man remained in critical condition.
It was the second such save within a week, said Marc-Antoine Deschamps, superintendent-public information for the Ottawa Paramedic Service
At about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, a man in his 60s felt unwell while watching a hockey game at a local arena, then collapsed outside.
A bystander spotted him unconscious, got the arena’s defibrillator — one of more than 1,200 in public places in Ottawa — and delivered one shock.
The man was conscious and talking when paramedics arrived.
“Resuscitation from cardiac arrests is all about teamwork through the Chain of Survival,” Deschamps said.
“The public plays a crucial role through recognition, 911, CPR and defibrillation.”
